How to Handle Children’s Disagreements
Disagreements often occur between our children during play or discussions. Our reaction to what happens must be balanced and free of discrimination or favoritism, so we do not cause harm to their feelings or psyche. But how should we handle it?
-
When they fight over a toy: You can allocate a specific time for each child with the toy or join them in playing together.
-
For minor disagreements: You can ignore them if there is no underlying cause or physical hitting.
-
For major disagreements: Allow each child the chance to express their opinion and perspective.
-
Beware of comparisons: Avoid comparing them and praise each one in the presence of the other so they realize that every person has their own unique strengths.
-
Praise cooperation: Commend your children when they cooperate; don’t wait until they fight to give them your attention.
-
Be a positive role model: Set an example for your child regarding cooperation and sharing with others.
