Causes and treatment of greed.
Children acting out of greed is one of the most frustrating and embarrassing behaviors for parents. They often wonder about the reason behind such actions, even when all the child’s needs are met. This drives us to understand the underlying causes that will help us take steps toward a solution.
The Causes:
-
Material or Emotional Deprivation: When a child experiences deprivation, a desire to acquire everything is born—even things they do not need. A deprived child lacks a sense of sufficiency.
-
Self-Validation: Some children believe that acquiring material things makes them more loved by others. Consequently, they strive to increase their possessions, and this drive may evolve into greed.
-
Imitating Greedy Behavior: Most children acquire greed from their surrounding environment. When the people children look up to as role models exhibit greedy behavior, it is natural for the children to follow suit.
Treating Greed:
-
Continuous Communication: Parents must maintain open channels of communication and talk with their children constantly.
-
Delayed Gratification: Parents should ensure they do not immediately obey every request the child makes.
-
Instilling Cooperation: It is vital to cultivate a spirit of cooperation and sharing within the child’s personality.
-
Developing Teamwork: Encouraging teamwork helps instill the value of sharing and helps the child move away from selfishness and greed.
