Mood Swings in Adolescents

Most of us find it difficult to understand the moods of teenagers and, consequently, face challenges in dealing with them. We must identify the causes of their mood swings so that we can interact with them effectively.

Causes of mood swings in adolescents:

  1. Hormonal changes: These usually begin between the ages of 10 to 14 in females and 12 to 16 in males. These changes cause emotional disturbances, leaving the teenager feeling confused and uncomfortable, which explains why they may act irrationally, especially with parents and family members.

  2. Psychological disorders: Such as bipolar disorder, where they may feel abnormal euphoria that makes it difficult to focus on daily tasks at times, and at other times feel intense sadness, low energy, or even suicidal thoughts. Similarly, when a teenager suffers from depression, they feel profound sadness all the time, tend toward isolation, and lose interest or enthusiasm for any activity.

  3. Severe academic pressure: Teenagers live in a world driven by speed and competition, placing them under constant pressure regarding their academic achievement or success in their favorite hobbies and sports. This can make them feel as though they have lost control in this fast-paced world.

  4. Lack of sleep and rest: Due to the aforementioned factors, teenagers are under great stress, making it essential for them to get enough rest. Failing to get adequate rest or sleep—ranging from 8 to 9 hours—contributes to increased mood swings.
