Tips to Make Your Child Listen

If you call your son once… twice… three times, and then scream so he finally listens, rest assured he won’t respond in the future until you scream; it will simply become a habit.

Don’t get your son used to shouting. Get up and take away whatever is distracting him. Hold it, look him in the eye, and say, “Why aren’t you answering Mom?”

Agree with him that anything he gets preoccupied with that prevents him from responding will be taken away immediately. If it’s the TV, it will be turned off; if it’s a mobile phone, it will be taken away; if it’s a toy, it will be removed. Do this calmly without nervousness or shouting, so you don’t spend the rest of your life screaming.

Either he will acquire the habit of shouting from you—and then you’ll complain about his temper and shouting that frays your nerves—or he will develop indifference and apathy, increasing your frustration while he finds satisfaction in provoking you to scream even more.
