Reasons for Selfishness
Children who are characterized by selfishness have underlying reasons for this behavior. Therefore, you must understand these causes to avoid reinforcing them.
Reasons for Selfishness:
-
Selfishness as a learned behavior from the family and the environment. When a child sees everyone around them being overly protective of their possessions, they believe this is the natural way to behave.
-
Feelings of neglect, which push the child to withdraw into themselves, focusing only on their own needs and belongings in imitation of others.
-
Lack of self-confidence and a sense of helplessness. These feelings make the child unable to communicate with peers or fulfill obligations, leading them to act as if they live alone.
-
Excessive pampering, which is a common parenting mistake. When a family provides everything for a child without asking for anything in return, the child becomes self-absorbed.
-
Providing overprotection, which makes children unable to take responsibility for their actions or for others.
-
Family breakdown and high rates of divorce, which are significant factors that can lead to selfish behavior in children.
