Reasons for Selfishness

Children who are characterized by selfishness have underlying reasons for this behavior. Therefore, you must understand these causes to avoid reinforcing them.

Reasons for Selfishness:

  1. Selfishness as a learned behavior from the family and the environment. When a child sees everyone around them being overly protective of their possessions, they believe this is the natural way to behave.

  2. Feelings of neglect, which push the child to withdraw into themselves, focusing only on their own needs and belongings in imitation of others.

  3. Lack of self-confidence and a sense of helplessness. These feelings make the child unable to communicate with peers or fulfill obligations, leading them to act as if they live alone.

  4. Excessive pampering, which is a common parenting mistake. When a family provides everything for a child without asking for anything in return, the child becomes self-absorbed.

  5. Providing overprotection, which makes children unable to take responsibility for their actions or for others.

  6. Family breakdown and high rates of divorce, which are significant factors that can lead to selfish behavior in children.
